Optimisation of refractory coatings realised with cored wire addition using a high-power diode laser

Laser; Cladding; Refractory alloys; Factorial experiments; International audience; The objective or our research was to obtain refractory alloys using the high-power diode laser (HPDL) coating technique. After optimisation using factorial experiments, two different cladding regimes were clearly distinguished. It was also shown that a very narrow transition zone exists between the two regimes, and, inside this zone, clad layers having a satisfactory compromise between the response functions (surface aspect and cavity presence) were obtained. Optical fiber diffusive tip designs for medical laser-lightguide delivery systems

Medical laser radiation delivery instruments with diffusive tips on the distal ends of plastic-clad silica optical fibers have been designed, tested, and manufactured. The instruments are optimized for endoscopic, therapeutic, dermatologic and surgical laser treatment. The diffusive tips provide radial, cylindrical and aside-conical spatial distributions of the output radiation. Optical schemes concerning each type of the tip and the corresponding spatial distribution functions of the output radiation are presented and analyzed. Designs of the lightguide instruments for surgical and dermatological procedures demanding local high-power laser irradiation are also discussed.

Spatial hole burning in thin-disk lasers and twisted-mode operation.

Spatial hole burning prevents single-frequency operation of thin-disk lasers when the thin disk is used as a folding mirror. We present an evaluation of the saturation effects in the disk for disks acting as end-mirrors and as folding-mirrors explaining one of the main obstacles towards single-frequency operation. It is shown that a twisted-mode scheme based on a multi-order quarter-wave plate combined with a polarizer provides an almost complete suppression of spatial hole burning and creates an additional wavelength selectivity that enforces efficient single-frequency operation.

Universal soliton pattern formations in passively mode-locked fiber lasers

International audience; We investigate multiple-soliton pattern formations in a figure-of-eight passively mode-locked fiber laser. Operation in the anomalous dispersion regime with a double-clad fiber amplifier allows generation of up to several hundreds of solitons per round trip. We report the observation of remarkable soliton distributions: soliton gas, soliton liquid, soliton polycrystal, and soliton crystal, thus indicating the universality of such complexes.
